The Appellate Court Services Division (ACSD) of the

Office of the State Court Administrator

(OSCA), part of the Oregon Judicial Department (OJD), operates the State of Oregon Law Library (SOLL). The SOLL serves as a principal legal research center for the Oregon appellate and trial courts, tax court, executive agencies, and citizens. It provides comprehensive legal resources to support the research of judges, clerks and legal staff of the appellate, tax, and trial courts of the state, and all state agencies’ legal staff; it is open to the public, without charge, and provides a variety of services to lawyers and lay patrons.

Benefits to You

Position Highlights

ACSD is hiring a Law Library Assistant to join our team at the SOLL in Salem, Oregon.

In this role, you will perform a variety of complex analytical duties, including legal and nonlegal research and statistical analysis, and will help develop and implement a variety of projects. You will process and shelve new materials, perform copy cataloging, organize and inventory our collections, and curate our selection of approved print materials. You will help the Library Electronic Publishing Design Specialist download material for the Library Digital Collection Database, identify and assign metadata terms, and convert, enhance, and optimize images. You will also help redact confidential information within Supreme Court and Court of Appeals briefs that are to be posted.

Additionally, you will create, edit, and delete patron records, administer system passwords, work with users to activate and deactivate their passwords, and troubleshoot technical issues. You will create marketing materials to promote SOLL resources and services to patrons. You will also coordinate vendor training sessions for judicial, legislative, and executive branch employees, collect feedback, and recommend improvements to the training format and content.

Part of your time will be spent providing support at the reference desk by performing circulation duties, processing library mail, routing materials, and ordering office supplies. You will prepare and process invoices, troubleshoot issues involving payments and orders, keep detailed records of expenditures, and help prepare budget-related documents and estimates. You will also provide coverage for the SOLL Law Librarian as needed, represent the library on the OSCA Safety Committee, and be one of our building’s evacuation coordinators.

Assigned tasks may be changed to accommodate workload and organizational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of two (2) years of library-related work.

  • Experience using a computer to perform research, analyze information, and perform a variety of tasks.

  • Some knowledge of law library administrative rules, policies, and procedures, library systems, and court practices and processes.

  • Some knowledge of public sector agencies, libraries, and other information sources where data, documents, and materials may be obtained.

  • Skill in writing and reviewing documents for accuracy and completeness.

  • Experience and skill in public speaking and addressing groups of varying sizes.

  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to a changing work environment.

Working Conditions

  • This is a full-time position, and the work schedule is currently 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for hours worked in excess of 40 per workweek.

  • Occasional after-hours or overtime work may be required.

  • Travel to industry-related meetings and for training sessions is required.

  • Hybrid work is available for this position (three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely); onsite availability is required as needed. All hybrid work assignments begin, end, or change only with administrative authority approval.

  • Making formal and informal presentations to groups may be required.

  • Frequent contact with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Long periods of sitting or standing.

  • Regular use of the following equipment: telephone, OJD-assigned computer with multiple monitors, copy machine, fax machine, and scanner.
