G.I. & Pulmonary Endoscopy RN (CLIN NURSE 2)

Job Summary

The CN identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2 years of RN endoscopy procedural experience as primary focus of work
  • 2 years of RN Moderate Sedation Experience as a substantial component of work responsibilities
  • A valid California registered nurse license without restriction
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Moderate Sedation Certification
  • ACLS Certification
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing.
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.

Department Overview


The Hospital Based Endoscopy Department provides care to patients undergoing flexible and ridged endoscopic procedures, to include but not limited to, EGD, Colonoscopy, and Bronchoscopy. Registered Nurses in the Endoscopy department at UC Davis Medical Center provide care patients with a variety of Endoscopy Procedures needs. Patient conditions include healthy with a few comorbidities, unhealthy with multiple comorbidities, and critically ill patients with multiple comorbidities.



Department Specific Job Scope


The Clinical Nurse completes all Endoscopy tasks such as providing moderate sedation, participating and providing technical assistance to the proceduralists across multiple procedure types. Procedure types include, but not limited to: Flexible Bronchoscopy, Ridged Bronchoscopy, Robotic Assisted Bronchoscopy, Upper & Lower GI Endoscopy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Biliary/Pancreatic Manometry, Cardiac resynchronization therapy, Colonoscopy, Dilatation During Endoscopy, Double Balloon Endoscopy, Endoscopic Variceal Ligation (EVL) Banding, Hemorrhoid Banding, Argon Plasma Coagulation Therapy, Ablation Therapy, Endoscopic Ultrasound with Fine Needle Aspiration, Sclerotherapy, Photodynamic Therapy, Laser Endoscopy, Pediatric pH Probe, Pediatric Capsule Endoscopy, Specimen Collection/Labeling, and Pre/Post-Endoscopy Recovery. The nurse will be able to sedate and recover adult patients with compromised airways and/or respiratory status, with ICU level of care patients, and other high acuity patients. Nurse will provide education and teaching to the patient and family for procedures they will perform at home. Nurse must be able to perform endoscope reprocessing and culturing as needed. Nurse must perform pre and post procedure phone calls and triage follow-up as needed with MD. New procedures are added to the daily practice periodically and the nurse must be adaptive to these changes after proper education has been received.
