Job Description

Founded in 2004, Grace Outreach is a female-focused organization that serves underserved women 18 years and older who seek to improve their academic status by securing their High School Equivalency diploma, pursuing higher education, and gaining living-wage employment. Grace Outreach originally started as a high school equivalency education center but has grown into a successful larger organization to include additional services that align with the goal of our clients achieving self-sufficiency.

Grace Outreach is seeking a passionate, experienced, and innovative part-time High School Equivalency (HSE) Instructor to teach and prepare women to take and pass the GED high school equivalency examination. The ideal candidate will bring a dynamic approach to teaching, utilizing multiple methods of instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of our students. This includes integrating hands-on experiments, interactive activities, and technology-based tools to enhance understanding and engagement. The instructor will leverage a variety of resources and innovative strategies to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and foster a deep appreciation for science. A commitment to empowering adult learners in an inclusive and supportive environment is essential. A creative and devoted team player is desired to foster and teach a diverse group of women in our South Bronx location. The ideal candidate will:

  • Provide daily instruction in science with a focus on building the appropriate skills necessary for students to pass the GED high school equivalency examination.
  • Develop appropriate lesson plans that align with the State Standards, the GED Science Standards, and the College and Career Readiness Standards.
  • Design and implement assessments that will aid students in preparing and successfully passing the GED exam.
  • Demonstrate deep content knowledge in science along with clear instructional objectives.
  • Provide classroom-based instructions to designated groups daily.
  • Possess and demonstrate positive classroom management skills in an adult education setting.
  • Design appropriate hands-on and project-based activities into science lesson plans and incorporate visual information in the classroom.
  • Track students’ progress and provide frequent and constructive feedback to improve productivity.
  • Prepare and provide supplementary materials for individualized, small-group, and whole-group activities as required to meet students' varying needs.
  • Work in an impartial manner with a diverse student body with a wide range of educational abilities and motivations.
  • Operate as part of a team working collaboratively to help women increase their ability to learn and continue their education beyond the GED/HSE.
  • Actively participate in staff development activities, workshops, staff meetings, orientations, and program recruitment.
  • Support intake efforts including testing, interviewing, scheduling, and onboarding new and returning students.
  • Manage logistics including tracking daily attendance, monitoring and maintaining data on student performance, and actively communicating with students.
  • Provide appropriate resources and support to student tutors and volunteers.
  • Use relevant technology to support instruction as needed.

Desired skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of GED-level science topics (life science, physical science, earth/space science)
  • Familiarity with state or national GED science curriculum standards
  • Ability to breakdown complex scientific concepts into accessible language
  • Ability to use diagnostic and formative assessment tools to evaluate student progress
  • Proficiency in using virtual learning tools (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or other online platforms)
  • Familiarity with science-specific apps or tools for simulations, virtual labs, or interactive experiments
  • Effective time management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Capability to conduct hands-on experiments, even in a resource-limited setting
  • Able to maintain discretion regarding sensitive issues and confidential information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Skills

  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to navigate the internet and integrate technology into classroom instruction.
  • Experience with tools like spreadsheets or education management systems for tracking performance
  • Comfort using email, messaging apps, or learning management systems (Blackboard, Salesforce)
  • Experience designing interactive or multimedia-rich presentations
  • Experience with educational software: Kahoot, Quizlet, or Google Classroom
  • Knowledge of Google Apps and Microsoft Office required.
  • knowledge of Salesforce or similar CRM preferred.

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree with six or more years’ experience in teaching and tutoring. Previous teaching experience in adult education and/or familiarity with the GED content is required. Specialization in teaching Science is strongly preferred.
