Job Description

Associate or Full Professor; nine-month tenure-track appointment beginning August 1, 2025. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive and commensurate with rank and experience. 

The University of Tennessee's Natalie L. Haslam College of Music is seeking a dynamic and experienced candidate to provide leadership and vision for the Music Education area. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a collaborative spirit and exhibit strategic innovation in the realm of music education. The candidate should also: 1) work collaboratively with other College of Music faculty to sustain and support the quality and enrollment of both undergraduate and graduate programs; 2) maintain a record of regional, national, and international research/creative/scholarly activity while participating in service appropriate for a university faculty member; 3) maintain close collaboration with the College of Education, current music educators, and the Tennessee Department of Education to stay updated on teacher certification requirements; 4) bring proven experiences that will maintain and increase the excellence and visibility of our programs; and 5) demonstrate a commitment to forward-thinking curriculum development, innovation, and community engagement.

Primary responsibilities include instructing graduate courses in research and foundations of music education, as well as undergraduate courses in instrumental music education, including Music Methods for High School, Senior Seminar, and Junior High/Middle School Methods. The candidate will work closely with the College of Education for placement and supervision of instrumental student teachers as well as with the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music for advising upper-level undergraduate music education majors. The candidate is also expected to serve on graduate committees and participate in various education and professional development opportunities including TMEA (ETSBOA), CNAfME, ATLAS, NAfME, TEAM Recertification, and EdTPA.

Required:

  1. Doctorate/Ph.D. in the area of Music Education required by time of appointment
  2. Proven success in teaching music education in the public school setting and leading significant college/university-level music education programs
  3. A consistent, well-rounded record of quantitative and qualitative research, presentations, and scholarly/creative activity
  4. Demonstrated abilities in organization, communication, and working effectively with faculty, students, colleagues, and administration
  5. Commitment to preparing versatile and innovative music educators for careers in the twenty-first century

Preferred: 

  1. Experience in leading graduate-level research methods including navigation of IRB and EdTPA process
  2. Evidence of successful communication and professional relationships with music educators at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels
  3. Experience with online learning opportunities in Music Education
  4. Communication abilities and cross-cultural competencies to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members

Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must:
Meet the qualifications for being an Associate Professor within UTK?s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; among these qualifications include normally having served as an assistant professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.

Candidates for the rank of Full Professor must:
Meet the qualifications for being a Full Professor within UTK?s faculty handbook and the NLH College of Music bylaws; among these qualifications include normally having served as an associate professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.
