Assistant Professor in Fashion and Costume History

Job Summary:

The Fashion Program at Marist College invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2025 in Fashion and Costume History. Primary duties include teaching undergraduate courses for the Fashion Design and Merchandising majors and the Liberal Arts core curriculum for a program with a strong pre-professional, collaborative orientation. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong analytical and historical knowledge of fashion and costume history, deep knowledge of modern disruptions within the fashion industry, and the ability to bridge history, theory, and practice. This role will also include managing and overseeing the Fashion archive collection. In addition, the candidate will demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to all racial, ethnic, religious, and social groups, and incorporate this understanding into teaching and learning experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph. D in Fashion or Costume History or a related discipline by the time of appointment
  • At least two years teaching experience in Fashion and Costume History related courses at the undergraduate level
  • A portfolio of skill sets that demonstrate expertise in subject matter
  • Evidence of diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching

Essential Functions:

  • Teach a 21-credit course load of courses in ART 281: History of Costume and FASH 381: History of Modern Fashion, along with the opportunity to teach first-year seminars and honors program courses
  • Oversee all details surrounding the Fashion Archive collection
  • Meet with students outside of class time for additional instruction as appropriate
  • Engage in a variety of service duties, including school and college committee service, curriculum development and assessment, admissions, and community/ industry outreach.
  • Engage in academic advising
  • Conduct research in the candidate’s area of expertise

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of relevant teaching experience in a pre-professional fashion program
  • Demonstrated archival and curatorial garment experience
  • Interest in interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaboration

  • Tuition Benefits:
    • Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
    • College pays 100% tuition only.
    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.
