Job Summary

Anesthesia technicians in this role, contribute to safe efficient and cost-effective anesthesia care. Anesthesia technicians and technologists provide support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases. They provide this service by preparing and maintaining patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia. Depending on individual expertise and training, the task of the anesthesia technician may include equipment maintenance and servicing such as cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, calibrating and testing, troubleshooting, requisitioning and recording of inspections and maintenance. They may operate a variety of mechanical, pneumatic and electronic equipment used to monitor, evaluate and manage the patient undergoing anesthesia. Individuals functioning as anesthesia technicians should be capable of a level of self- direction and supervision that is commensurate with their training. Anesthesia Technician Series ConceptAnesthesia Technicians are responsible for maintaining all anesthesia service areas in readiness for use by Anesthesiologist and Anesthetists. Incumbents are responsible for anesthesia equipment and supplies; work independently and be able to make decisions and set priorities with some guidance; responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the institution; may assist Anesthesiologists with patient positioning, preparation of sterile fields, assisting with placement of invasive monitoring lines, application of regional, epidural and spinal anesthesia techniques, invasive and noninvasive procedure setups, or perform and/or record cardiac output determinations.

Characteristics of a level 1 Anesthesia Technician:

1. Under general supervisor, incumbents perform the full range of duties as outlined in the series concept.

2. The level I anesthesia technician is an individual who has not met the requirements to apply for the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians national certification examination. The requirements to sit for the technician certification exam (Cer.A.T.) are: Two (2) years employment as an Anesthesia Technician or graduate of an ASATT approved 2-year educational program of study. High school graduate or equivalent (GED) certificate. Proficiency in English Basic computer skills

3. Developing/mastering Core Competencies, such as but not limited to:

Knowledge with preparation of sterile fields, patient positioning, placement of invasive monitoring lines, application of regional, epidural and spinal anesthesia techniques, invasive and noninvasive procedure setups, or perform and/or record cardiac output determinations.

Knowledge with use and care of physiological monitors relating to the administration of anesthesia Knowledge of ethical and legal issues and responsibilities

Knowledge of biologic hazards, infection control, and standard precautions

Knowledge of fire, electrical, laser and explosion hazards in the operating room and other anesthesia related areas

Knowledge of storage, use and safe handling of bulk and cylinder gases

Knowledge of structure, function and care of all components of anesthesia delivery systems Knowledge of sterile technique and the principals of aseptic practice Knowledge of usage of common anesthetic gases

Knowledge of type and indications for local, monitored anesthesia care (MAC), regional and general anesthesia

Knowledge of principles of purchasing and supply levels Knowledge of performing laboratory tests such as blood gases (ABG).

Knowledge of performing preventative maintenance and simple mechanical repairs. Knowledge of Cardiothoracic procedures

Knowledge of Bronchoscopy procedures. Knowledge of auto-transfusion (cell saver)

Minimum Qualifications

  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR or UCDH-issued CPR Certification
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year work experience in a hospital procedural unit or operating room
  • Skills:Problem solving skills to define a problem identify the resources available to help solve the problem.Decision making skills to independently take action to replace or repair broken equipment or supplies.Skills to make technical suggestions to anesthesia providers pertaining to patient care.Math skills to perform simple drug calculations, accurately, subtract, multiply and divide whole number and decimals manually, by using a calculator or computer.Knowledge:Knowledge and general understanding of anesthesia procedures, supplies drugs and equipment.Knowledge of medical, anesthesia, and surgical terminology. Knowledge of anesthesiology, OR, and pharmacy policy and procedures.Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and CPR. Knowledge of anesthesia machines. Knowledge of department safety manuals.Knowledge of American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & Technicians guidelines. (ASATT)Abilities:Ability to cope with stressful situations in a surgical environment.Ability to resolve problems and come to a solution quickly.Ability to anticipate needs of the anesthesia care provider.Ability to work with a multitude of personalities under stressful conditionsAbility to display a courteous and professional attitude at all times. Ability to use PC based computer applications to perform lab functions, and look up hospital policies and procedures


Preferred Qualifications

  • ASATT-The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians- Certification
  • Bachelor's degree in health-related field or science.
  • Recent work experience supporting anesthesia
  • Completed vocational or cross-training in anesthesia technology involving preparation, cleaning, stocking, and trouble shooting anesthesia equipment and supply carts

Department Overview


The department delivers patient care through provision and management of fiscal, materiel, and human resources; technological support; planning and coordinating surgical care with the medical and paramedical staff to effectively manage patients for surgical intervention. This position is directly responsible in providing technical support pre-, intra- and post-procedure to anesthesia providers in all service areas including, but not limited to: Pavilion Operating Room, UT2 OR, Same Day Surgery Center, Children's Surgery Center, Labor and Delivery, Interventional Radiology, Cancer Center, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Cardiac Cath Lab, EP lab, G. I. Lab, Midtown GI Clinic, Neonatal ICU, CT Suites, SICU and MRI.
